The Big Bang Theory is getting a spin-off! Following the success of the iconic sitcom, as well as the prequel series, , will expand its universe with a new project currently in the works. Here's what we know so far…

The Big Bang Theory spin-off release date 

spin-off was announced during the Warner Bros. Discovery's press day. While an official release date has not been revealed, if ordered to series it will be available to stream on Max – a new platform combining HBO Max and Discovery+.

The Big Bang Theory spin-off plot

The plot is currently being kept under wraps, however, it has been announced that creator Chuck Lorre is working on the series. The project is currently in the early stages of development, so it's unlikely that details will emerge for a while. 

It's believed that the spin-off will feature one-hour episodes, and feature a completely new cast. However, there is potential for some of the original cast members to reprise their roles.  

It's hardly surprising that universe is expanding. Across its 12-year run, the flagship show attracted millions of viewers, with the season 12 finale drawing in a whopping 18.52 million. 

was also the recipient of several awards during its run. In 2009, the series was crowned the best comedy series by the Television Critics Association, while Sheldon Cooper actor Jim Parsons won the award for individual achievement in comedy. It also bagged the People's Choice Award for Favorite Comedy in 2010 and 2016. 

The Prequel series, , has also enjoyed great success and was recently greenlit for a seventh series by CBS. In 2022, it was revealed that Young Sheldon was the most-watched broadcast TV comedy for the 2021-2022 Season, beating its competitors at ABC, Fox, NBC and the CW.
